10 Lixouri Markato in 1940

The Lixouri Markato, also known as “The Market,” was constructed between 1822 and 1828 during the British administration of the Ionian Islands. The building was designed in the neoclassical style by Irish engineer John Pitt Kennedy, reflecting the influence of ancient Greek architectural elements brought to the region by British architects. It was a two-story structure with shops on the ground floor and administrative offices, including the town hall, on the upper floor. The Markato was adorned with Doric columns and featured a striking balcony surrounding the upper level.

This iconic structure was a prominent part of Lixouri’s pre-earthquake heritage but was destroyed in the devastating earthquakes of 1953 that reshaped much of Kefalonia’s architecture. Today, its memory remains a significant part of Lixouri’s cultural history and identity .

The design in the book is from an old 1900 postcard at this time the statue of Ilias Miniatis was not erected. So it was added in the illustration.
